Việc ước lượng và xác định mô hình hạn hán khí tượng lâu dài đóng vai trò quan trọng trong quản lý nước vùng và thực tiễn nông nghiệp đất khô ở khí hậu khô cằn và nửa khô cằn. Trong nghiên cứu này, Chỉ số Lượng mưa tiêu chuẩn (SPI) đã được chọn làm tiêu chí chính để đánh giá mức độ nghiêm trọng của các sự kiện hạn hán khí tượng. Mục tiêu của bài báo này là tạo ra bản đồ xác suất xảy ra hạn hán khí tượng cho các lớp SPI khác nhau thông qua phân tích không gian-thời gian. Nhiều phương pháp thống kê, được biết đến với tên gọi phương pháp không địa thống kê (như đa giác Thiessen, trọng số khoảng cách nghịch đảo và dựa trên spline), cũng như các phương pháp địa thống kê (như các loại kriging khác nhau và entropy tối đa Bayes (BME)), hiện có thể được sử dụng cho mục đích của nghiên cứu này. Trong nghiên cứu này, phương pháp kriging thông thường (OK) được sử dụng như một phương pháp địa thống kê cổ điển và BME như một phương pháp địa thống kê hiện đại. Nghiên cứu điển hình của nghiên cứu này là lưu vực Hồ Namak nằm ở khu vực trung tâm của Iran với diện tích khoảng 90.000 km2. Lưu vực này bao gồm các vùng có điều kiện khí hậu khác nhau một cách đáng kể, từ rất khô đến rất ẩm. Kết quả của nghiên cứu điển hình bao gồm phân bố không gian của SPI cho các lớp SPI khô (các lớp khô vừa, khô nghiêm trọng và khô cực đoan) và các lớp SPI ẩm (các lớp ẩm vừa, ẩm nghiêm trọng và ẩm cực đoan) có thể được sử dụng để xác định các khu vực dễ bị tổn thương trước hạn hán. Các phương pháp địa thống kê đã được chọn đã được so sánh dựa trên quy trình xác thực chéo bỏ một (leave-one-out) và phân bố không gian-thời gian của các giá trị SPI. Kết quả của việc xác thực chéo cho thấy sự vượt trội của BME so với OK. Bản đồ BME xác suất xảy ra cũng thực tế hơn so với bản đồ OK.
