Germanium được coi là một nguyên tố không thiết yếu; tuy nhiên, vẫn còn ít thông tin được biết đến về ý nghĩa của nó đối với các sinh vật sống. Nó thể hiện tác dụng phòng ngừa và điều trị trong việc điều trị các bệnh nghiêm trọng như ung thư, nhiễm HIV, và những bệnh khác. Germanium không thể hiện độc tính cấp tính, nhưng do nó có xu hướng tích tụ ở nhiều cơ quan và mô, những tác dụng phụ không mong muốn và thậm chí nguy hiểm đã được báo cáo sau khi sử dụng kéo dài và/hoặc liều cao. Nói chung, các hợp chất vô cơ của germanium độc hại hơn so với các hợp chất hữu cơ của nó. Địa hóa học của nước khoáng (có CO2 lạnh, nhiệt độ) từ các suối ở Sudetes (Ba Lan) đã được làm rõ về thành phần và pha khoáng có thể điều khiển germanium. Germanium và silicon trong nước nhiệt (trên 20 °C) có thể xuất phát từ độ hòa tan của silicat trong đá chứa nước tinh thể (granite, gneiss) và có thể được kiểm soát bởi thạch anh mới hình thành. Nước CO2 giàu đã cho thấy sự đa dạng đáng kể về hóa học lỏng và mối quan hệ của germanium với sắt, silicon, hoặc asen. Tại địa phương, cả trong các đá chứa nước trầm tích (cát kết) và biến chất (gneiss), khoáng chứa sắt nguyên thủy (silicat) và/hoặc thứ cấp (oxide) có khả năng giải phóng germanium vào dung dịch. Trong vùng nước CO2 giàu ở phía tây Kłodzko, germanium có mối tương quan rõ rệt với asen. Người ta giả thuyết rằng cả hai nguyên tố đều có nguồn gốc chung từ nền tảng tinh thể và/hoặc di cư của các chất có nguồn gốc hậu magma dọc theo các bất thường sâu liên quan đến vùng đứt gãy Poříčí-Hronov có hoạt động địa chấn.
