Đã có những tiến bộ đáng kể trong việc hiểu biết về thiên văn và chiêm tinh học Lưỡng Hà kể từ khi những tấm biển hình nêm chứa đựng các văn bản thiên văn và chiêm tinh học được giải mã vào cuối thế kỷ 19. Tuy nhiên, cho đến nay, chỉ có ít nỗ lực được thực hiện để viết một lịch sử chi tiết về các khoa học thiên thể Lưỡng Hà, ngược lại với việc nghiên cứu chi tiết các văn bản và loại hình thiên văn hoặc chiêm tinh học cụ thể. Mục tiêu của tôi trong bài viết này là trình bày một số ý tưởng về cách mà lịch sử như vậy nên được viết và đặc biệt là xem xét liệu và như thế nào chứng cứ thị giác có thể được đưa vào bên cạnh chứng cứ văn bản trong việc viết lịch sử này.
