Helping Medical Students Make the Transition from Biological to Psychological Thinking

Many medical students have limited background in behavioral science. Over the years many efforts to improve their capacity for psychological thinking have been attempted, with varying degrees of success. The author presents a new approach based on conceptualizing the educational problem as due to a legitimate, cognitive struggle arising from the lack of knowledge at the interface of neuroscience and behavioral science. Thus, an introductory lecture presenting the current state of knowledge at this interface leads medical students to appreciate and accept psychological concepts as a logical outgrowth of their well-established biological thinking. The lecture has been given for three years now with good success, seeming to reduce student “resistance.”
