Để hỗ trợ bang Ohio, Hoa Kỳ trong việc giải quyết tình trạng đại dịch opioid, Tổng chưởng lý Ohio đã chỉ định các chuyên gia trong nhiều lĩnh vực học thuật vào Ủy ban Khoa học về Phòng ngừa và Giáo dục Opioid (SCOPE). Mục tiêu của SCOPE là áp dụng các nguyên tắc khoa học trong việc phát triển các chiến lược phòng ngừa và giáo dục nhằm giảm thiểu rối loạn sử dụng chất gây nghiện (SUD). Một lĩnh vực được SCOPE chú trọng là giáo dục SUD cho các chuyên gia chăm sóc sức khỏe. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu hiện tại là xác định nội dung và mức độ đào tạo của các chuyên gia chăm sóc sức khỏe tương lai về quản lý cơn đau, SUD và các trải nghiệm khó khăn trong trẻ em (ACEs).
Vào tháng 12 năm 2019, một cuộc khảo sát đã được phát đến 49 trường đào tạo chuyên gia chăm sóc sức khỏe tại Ohio, bao gồm các lĩnh vực như: y học, dược phẩm, y tá thực hành nâng cao (APRN), trợ lý bác sĩ, nha khoa và nhãn khoa. Bảng khảo sát bao gồm bốn lĩnh vực: sàng lọc ban đầu cho bệnh nhân, đào tạo về SUD, đào tạo chăm sóc bệnh nhân có nguy cơ cao về SUD và giáo dục đánh giá bệnh nhân về ACEs.
