Đau mặt đóng một vai trò quan trọng trong chẩn đoán thường quy của phẫu thuật miệng, hàm và mặt. Những bệnh nhân bị đau mặt thường biểu hiện các triệu chứng mà ngay từ cái nhìn đầu tiên có thể khó phân loại, vì không thể xác định được mối tương quan nha khoa nào để làm trọng tâm chẩn đoán. Phân loại Quốc tế về Đau Đầu mặt cung cấp một cái nhìn tổng quan về các bệnh đau mặt. Một số đại diện đáng chú ý bao gồm đau dây thần kinh sinh ba (trigeminusneuralgie) và các cơn đau mặt tương tự như các cơn đau đầu nguyên phát, chẳng hạn như chứng đau nửa đầu (faziale Migräne). Hơn nữa, các cơn đau thần kinh dây thần kinh sinh ba sau chấn thương và các cơn đau mặt tự phát kéo dài cũng được mô tả.
