Nghiên cứu này đã sử dụng mô hình chuột để nghiên cứu phản ứng thích nghi trong hồi tràng còn lại và tá tràng sau khi cắt bỏ 80% ruột non lớn. Các thời điểm được chọn để phản ánh những thay đổi trong sự biểu hiện gen ở giai đoạn đầu của phản ứng, vì đây là các gen thay đổi để khởi động và tối đa hóa phản ứng quan sát được trong quá trình thích nghi. Những con chuột Sprague Dawley đã trải qua quy trình cắt bỏ 80% ruột non. Phân tích phản ứng chuỗi polymerase phân biệt (DD-PCR) đã được thực hiện trên mRNA được chiết xuất từ hồi tràng và tá tràng còn lại vào các thời điểm 0, 1, 2, 4 và 7 ngày sau khi cắt bỏ. DD-PCR đã xác định được 11 gen có thể được điều chỉnh sau khi cắt bỏ ruột non lớn. Các gen được xác nhận là điều chỉnh gồm có RNA ribosome 16S, phân tử giống kháng nguyên lymphocyte 6 (LY6), yếu tố giống Krüppel-3 (KLF-3), protein gắn G (CRFG), chất vận chuyển hệ thống A 2 (SAT2) và một gen đặc hiệu của ruột (tương tự mKIAA0493). Phân tích DD-PCR cho thấy sự điều chỉnh của một số gen trước đây không được biết đến có liên quan đến quá trình thích nghi sau khi cắt bỏ ruột non lớn hoặc chưa từng được đặc trưng trong ruột. Những gen này có thể đóng vai trò quan trọng trong việc mang lại những thay đổi thấy được trong phản ứng thích nghi.
