Die Untersuchung setzt sich kritisch mit der in der geschlechterbezogenen Stadtforschung verbreiteten Betrachtung von Suburbia als der antifeministischen Umgebung schlechthin auseinander. Anhand des nordamerikanischen Suburbanisierungsprozesses wird einerseits gezeigt, dass es sich gerade bei Suburbia zwar um ein zutiefst geschlechtlich definiertes und mit sozialen, kulturellen und moralischen Normen und Werten aufgeladenes Ordnungsmodell handelt. Andererseits aber wird argumentiert, dass gerade Suburbias Geschlechtscharakter bzw. die Geschlechterbilder und Geschlechterrollen, auf denen es aufruhte und die es seinerseits prägte, niemals unumstritten, sondern vielmehr Gegenstand von teils erbitterten Aushandlungs- und Deutungskämpfen waren und sind. Letztere werden entlang der drei Phasen des nordamerikanischen Suburbanisierungsprozesses — von der viktorianischen Konstruktion von Suburbia aus dem Geiste symbolischer Dichotomien über die fordistische Verallgemeinerung und Verfestigung von Suburbia bis hin zur postfordistischen Auflösung von Suburbia in einer neuen Stadt — analysiert. Deutlich wird, dass sich unter veränderten gesellschaftlichen Bedingungen nicht nur die suburbane Wohn- und Siedlungsform als solche grundlegend wandelt, sondern auch und gerade ihre Bedeutung für die Geschlechterbeziehungen.
