Bài báo này sử dụng một tài khoản xét lại về sự xuất hiện của hòa bình Bắc Âu vào thế kỷ 19 để mở ra không gian cho việc suy nghĩ lại và tái lý thuyết về các động lực cấu thành cơ bản bên dưới các cộng đồng an ninh. Trong khi trường hợp Bắc Âu thường được coi là một ví dụ điển hình về một cộng đồng an ninh, bài báo lập luận rằng nó đã không xuất hiện theo cách thường được khẳng định. Thứ nhất, an ninh không được xem là một luận điểm cấu thành chính như giả định của lý thuyết cộng đồng an ninh truyền thống; thứ hai, sự kết nối không xuất hiện chỉ vì sự khác biệt được đổi lấy sự tương đồng nâng cao. Trên thực tế, an ninh đã bị gạt sang một bên và sự khác biệt được diễn giải lại thay vì bị xóa bỏ trong việc hình thành các danh tính an toàn về mặt bản thể học.
