Sự giảm đáng kể tỷ lệ tử vong ở trẻ sơ sinh có trọng lượng thấp trong hai thập kỷ qua đã được ghi nhận tại các quốc gia phát triển mà không có sự gia tăng trong tỷ lệ tàn tật chính ở những trẻ sống sót. Vào những năm 1980, tiên lượng tổng thể cho những trẻ sơ sinh có trọng lượng trên 800g vẫn tốt. Những nỗ lực không ngừng để cải thiện chăm sóc trong giai đoạn chu sinh và sơ sinh có thể mong đợi sẽ giảm thêm nguy cơ sinh non.
