In 1979 the Food Agency earned a gross profit of roughly Y23850 on each of the 5.9 million metric tons of wheat imported, reflecting the difference between an average import price of Y40 150 for the year and an average resale price of Y64 000. Inspite of the yen's depreciation and higher international wheat prices, the Japanese government profited by an estimated Y67 billion in 1979, whereas the margin was much larger in 1977 (Y90 billion) and in 1978 (Y101 billion)op cit Ref 4, p 4.
