Abstract Japanese companies have a collectivist culture that reinforces their organizational learning concept. They are highly skilled, communicate openly and are customer focused. Before entering the Japanese market, managers in overseas companies need to fully understand the political, economic, technological and socio‐cultural environment in order that they understand and accommodate the priorities of Japanese managers.
