A grain refining process has been developed for TP347H tubes, where grain size as fine as GS No. 8 can be obtained even at higher solution treating temperatures. Grain refinement is caused by the precipitation of fine NbC carbides during solution treatment. The tubes thus processed offer a good combination of mechanical properties with resistance to steam and alkali hot corrosion. Double-wall tubes were also produced by the above process, and found viable for severe environment applications. These findings prove fine-grained TP347H tubing a probable choice for application in such advanced boilers as those having 4500 psi (30 mPa) × 1150° F (620° C) steam conditions.
