Các cuộc thảo luận xoay quanh tình trạng thiếu hụt thủy thủ toàn cầu (đặc biệt là các sĩ quan tàu) vẫn tiếp tục phát triển và thu hút sự chú ý của ngày càng nhiều nhà nghiên cứu và các chuyên gia trong ngành trong thời gian gần đây. Có sự đồng thuận chung trong tài liệu rằng tính di động từ tàu lên bờ của thủy thủ (bao gồm cả sĩ quan và thủy thủ không có giấy phép) đang gia tăng. Việc kéo dài số năm mà thủy thủ ở lại trên biển và giữ chân họ sau đó do đó là một vấn đề quan trọng cần phải được chú ý thêm. Bài báo khái niệm này (sản phẩm của một cuộc tổng quan tài liệu có hệ thống về thủy thủ) lập luận rằng để giữ chân hiệu quả các sĩ quan tàu và thực tập sinh tại biển, cần phải xác định và quản lý đầy đủ các yếu tố tiêu cực ảnh hưởng đến việc giữ chân họ bởi các nhà tuyển dụng trong ngành hàng hải. Kết quả từ việc tổng hợp tài liệu đã được xem xét cho thấy rằng các vấn đề giữ chân mà các nhà tuyển dụng trong ngành hàng hải cần tập trung chủ yếu liên quan đến các yếu tố: sự hài lòng với công việc và nhà tuyển dụng, cơ hội thăng tiến nghề nghiệp và điều kiện làm việc tốt. Bài báo cũng xem xét cụm các phương pháp và lý thuyết quản lý nguồn nhân lực giữa các nhà tuyển dụng trong ngành và cách mà chúng tiên đoán về tính di động của thủy thủ vào các công việc trên đất liền. Các khuyến nghị được đưa ra về cách mà các nhà tuyển dụng trong ngành hàng hải có thể giảm bớt cuộc khủng hoảng lao động hiện tại trong ngành thông qua các chiến lược giữ chân hợp lý.
