Một mô hình thay thế trong đó điều tiết cảm xúc tại thời điểm 2 và chức năng điều hành tại thời điểm 3 trung gian hóa tác động của triệu chứng mất ngủ lên RNT cũng có ý nghĩa; tuy nhiên, kích thước hiệu ứng tương đối nhỏ hơn. Những phát hiện này cho thấy chức năng điều hành và điều tiết cảm xúc là những yếu tố có thể giải thích vai trò của triệu chứng mất ngủ trong sự phát triển của RNT được quan sát thấy trong nhiều rối loạn tâm thần.
