Đánh giá rủi ro về trichloroethylene (TRI) được thực hiện đặc biệt cho môi trường biển, theo phương pháp đã được quy định trong Quy định đánh giá rủi ro của EU (1488/94) và Tài liệu Hướng dẫn của Quy định về các Chất Mới và Chất Đã Có của EU (TGD, 1997). Nghiên cứu bao gồm việc thu thập và đánh giá dữ liệu về tác động và nồng độ môi trường từ các chương trình giám sát phân tích ở các con sông lớn và cửa sông trong khu vực Biển Bắc. Mức độ rủi ro được chỉ ra bởi tỷ lệ giữa "nồng độ môi trường dự đoán" (PEC) và "nồng độ không có tác động dự đoán" (PNEC) cho môi trường dưới nước biển. Tổng cộng, 19 nghiên cứu về cá, 30 nghiên cứu về động vật không xương sống và 14 nghiên cứu về tảo đã được đánh giá.
