Hầu hết các nghiên cứu về lãnh đạo đạo đức cho đến nay tập trung vào những hậu quả của lãnh đạo đạo đức hơn là các yếu tố trước đó của nó. Ở đây, chúng tôi nhằm đóng góp cho lĩnh vực này bằng cách nghiên cứu tính cách của nhà lãnh đạo như một yếu tố tiền đề tiềm năng trong hành vi của nhà lãnh đạo đạo đức. Trong hai nghiên cứu đa nguồn, chúng tôi đã điều tra các mối quan hệ giữa các đặc điểm tính cách và hành vi lãnh đạo đạo đức. Tính cách của nhà lãnh đạo được đo lường thông qua tự đánh giá dựa trên khung năm yếu tố tính cách. Hai cấp dưới đã đánh giá hành vi đạo đức của các nhà lãnh đạo của họ. Nghiên cứu 1 sử dụng thang đo Lãnh Đạo Đạo Đức đơn chiều (ELS). Trong nghiên cứu 2, chúng tôi đã sử dụng thang đo này cũng như một công cụ phân biệt ba hành vi lãnh đạo đạo đức khác nhau, cụ thể là công bằng, làm rõ vai trò và chia sẻ quyền lực. Hơn nữa, trong nghiên cứu 2, chúng tôi đã kiểm soát ảnh hưởng của mối quan hệ giữa nhà lãnh đạo và cấp dưới (LMX). Như mong đợi, sự chu đáo và sự hòa đồng có mối quan hệ nhất quán nhất với lãnh đạo đạo đức. Trong nghiên cứu 1, sau khi kiểm soát cho các đặc điểm tính cách khác, sự chu đáo có mối quan hệ tích cực với lãnh đạo đạo đức. Trong nghiên cứu 2, sau khi kiểm soát cho các đặc điểm khác và LMX, sự chu đáo có mối quan hệ tích cực với lãnh đạo đạo đức và hành vi làm rõ vai trò, và sự hòa đồng có mối quan hệ với chia sẻ quyền lực và công bằng. Ngoài ra, sự ổn định cảm xúc có mối quan hệ tích cực với lãnh đạo đạo đức và làm rõ vai trò sau khi kiểm soát cho LMX. Như mong đợi, sự cởi mở với trải nghiệm và hướng ngoại không có mối quan hệ nào với các hành vi lãnh đạo đạo đức.
