Việc giám sát thời gian thực hàm lượng nitơ (N) lá bằng phương pháp cảm biến từ xa có thể chẩn đoán chính xác tình trạng dinh dưỡng của cây trồng và hỗ trợ quản lý N chính xác. Tuy nhiên, các phương pháp ước lượng hàm lượng N lá tích hợp theo phương thẳng đứng không xem xét các hệ thống canh tác khác nhau, trong đó các giai đoạn tăng trưởng của cây ngô không đồng bộ, dẫn đến giá trị thực tiễn của kết quả bị giảm. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu này là đề xuất một chỉ số diện tích hấp thụ cạnh đỏ tối ưu (OREA) trong đó độ chính xác dự đoán của hàm lượng N lá tích hợp theo phương thẳng đứng được cải thiện trong các tán lá ngô được gieo vào mùa xuân và mùa hè. Kết quả cho thấy rằng sự phân bố N theo chiều dọc tồn tại bất kể sự thay đổi trong các giai đoạn tăng trưởng của ngô, tức là, mật độ N lá của các lớp trên và giữa cao hơn so với các lớp dưới. Các chỉ số thực vật (VIs) đã được công bố cung cấp mối tương quan tương đối tốt với mật độ N lá ở các lớp khác nhau trong tất cả các tập dữ liệu. Khi dự đoán mật độ N lá của từng lớp lá, một VI tối ưu được sinh ra, và các VI không nhất quán sẽ hạn chế ứng dụng thực tiễn của nó. Để vượt qua những nhược điểm của sự không nhất quán của từng VI khi ước lượng mật độ N lá ở các lớp khác nhau, một chỉ số OREA mới đã được đề xuất dựa trên tham số diện tích hấp thụ cạnh đỏ. Chỉ số OREA cho thấy độ chính xác dự đoán cao nhất với mật độ N lá cho toàn bộ tán (r2 = 0.811, RMSE = 0.374, RE = 13.17%) và tán không có lá đầu tiên trên cùng (r2 = 0.795, RMSE = 0.269, RE = 15.20%) so với các VI đã công bố khác. Kết luận rằng hàm lượng N lá tích hợp theo phương thẳng đứng dưới các thí nghiệm thực địa khác nhau có thể được ước lượng chính xác nhờ vào chỉ số OREA.
