Sa sút trí tuệ dạng hành vi vùng trán-thời gian (bvFTD) là một hình thức thoái hóa vùng trán-thời gian đặc trưng bởi những thay đổi sớm trong tính cách, sự giảm nhạy cảm cảm xúc, và/hoặc mất đi khả năng cảm thông. Nghiên cứu gần đây đã nhấn mạnh rằng những đặc điểm này có thể ít nhiều được giải thích bởi những suy giảm trong lý thuyết về tâm trí (ToM; tức là, khả năng hiểu và dự đoán hành vi của người khác bằng cách gán cho họ các trạng thái tâm thần độc lập). Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu ngẫu nhiên mù đôi, kiểm soát giả dược này là kiểm nghiệm giả thuyết rằng kích thích dòng điện trực tiếp qua hộp sọ (tDCS) lên vỏ não trán giữa (MFC) làm tăng cường chọn lọc quá trình xử lý ý định giao tiếp, một khả năng ToM cụ thể. Sử dụng thiết kế trực tuyến với một phiên, chúng tôi đã tiến hành một nhiệm vụ ToM đo lường khả năng đại diện cho các ý định riêng tư và giao tiếp của người khác trong khi được kích thích tDCS hoạt động hoặc giả dược với 16 bệnh nhân bvFTD. Để đánh giá tác động của bệnh sa sút trí tuệ lên hiệu suất trong nhiệm vụ ToM, chúng tôi đã đưa vào 16 tình nguyện viên khỏe mạnh cùng độ tuổi, những người đã được yêu cầu thực hiện toàn bộ nhiệm vụ ToM thí nghiệm. BvFTD được đặc trưng bởi sự suy giảm trong việc hiểu cả ý định giao tiếp và riêng tư so với nhóm đối chứng khỏe mạnh và bởi sự suy giảm không tương xứng trong việc xử lý ý định giao tiếp so với ý định riêng tư. Sự cải thiện đáng kể và chọn lọc về độ chính xác trong việc hiểu ý định giao tiếp sau khi kích thích hoạt động đã được quan sát thấy ở bệnh nhân bvFTD. Đây là nghiên cứu đầu tiên phân tích khả năng ToM ở bệnh nhân bvFTD sử dụng kích thích tDCS. Những phát hiện của chúng tôi có thể đóng góp vào sự phát triển của phương pháp điều trị kích thích não không xâm lấn hiệu quả cho các suy giảm ToM ở bệnh nhân bvFTD.
