Các rối loạn nội tiết là rất quan trọng trong việc điều chỉnh các chức năng cơ thể quan trọng và thường chi phối các hệ thống cơ quan khác. Các triệu chứng tiêu hóa như khó nuốt, đau vùng thượng vị, tiêu chảy hoặc táo bón thường gặp trong thực hành lâm sàng, nhưng việc xác định nguyên nhân có thể khó khăn. Trong việc chẩn đoán phân biệt, ngoài các bệnh tiêu hóa nguyên phát như achalasia, u ác tính của đường tiêu hóa và các bệnh viêm ruột mãn tính, cũng cần xem xét các nguyên nhân nội tiết. Các vấn đề như cường giáp, cường cận giáp nguyên phát hoặc khối u của tụy nội tiết có thể là nguyên nhân gây ra tình trạng tiêu chảy. Mối liên hệ giữa các bệnh nội tiết và tiêu hóa cũng được thể hiện rõ ràng qua sự kết hợp giữa các khối u tuyến giáp dạng nhú với bệnh polyp ác tính gia đình (FAP), sự phát triển nhiều khối u nội tiết (typ 1) với bệnh M.
