Chẩn đoán rối loạn stress sau chấn thương tâm lý (PTSD) liên quan đến chiến tranh mãn tính đã được liên kết nhất quán với các kết quả việc làm kém. Nghiên cứu này xem xét mối quan hệ đó một cách sâu hơn, phân tích cách thức mức độ triệu chứng tương quan với tình trạng việc làm, loại hình nghề nghiệp và thu nhập. Các đối tượng tham gia nghiên cứu là nam cựu chiến binh Việt Nam có PTSD nặng hoặc rất nặng đã nhận điều trị trong hệ thống Bộ Cựu chiến binh (N = 325). Những cựu chiến binh có triệu chứng nặng hơn có khả năng cao hơn để làm việc bán thời gian hoặc không làm việc. Trong số những người lao động, triệu chứng nặng hơn có liên quan yếu đến việc có vị trí bán hàng hoặc văn thư. Dựa vào tình trạng việc làm và loại hình nghề nghiệp, không có mối quan hệ đáng kể nào giữa mức độ triệu chứng PTSD và thu nhập. Những thang đo triệu chứng PTSD thay thế cho kết quả tương tự. Phát hiện của chúng tôi cho thấy ngay cả những giảm nhẹ khiêm tốn trong triệu chứng PTSD cũng có thể dẫn đến những cải thiện trong việc làm, ngay cả khi mức độ triệu chứng tổng thể vẫn nặng.
