Một thí nghiệm đã được thực hiện để nghiên cứu tác động của axit 5-sulfosalicylic (5-SSA) đến tuổi thọ trong nước của hoa cắt thuộc giống Gladiolus grandiflora ‘Green Willow’. Dung dịch trong lọ có chứa 5-SSA đã làm tăng đáng kể sự hấp thụ tích lũy dung dịch của lọ, tuổi thọ trong nước, số lượng nụ hoa mở và giảm số lượng nụ hoa chưa mở so với các mẫu đối chứng. Các chồi hoa được giữ trong dung dịch nước có chứa 5-SSA cũng thể hiện tỷ lệ hô hấp thấp hơn, sự peroxy hóa lipid và hoạt động của lipoxygenase (LOX) thấp hơn, đồng thời có độ ổn định của màng cao hơn, nồng độ protein hòa tan cao hơn và hoạt động của enzyme superoxide dismutase (SOD) và catalase cao hơn. Kết quả cho thấy 5-SSA làm tăng tuổi thọ trong nước bằng cách tăng cường hoạt động loại bỏ các loài oxy phản ứng (ROS) của hoa cắt Gladiolus.
