Các phương pháp nghiên cứu và phân tích được thông báo bởi lý thuyết giao thoa, hiện tượng học và khung năng lực văn hóa. Mười sáu phụ nữ trẻ tị nạn sinh ra từ châu Phi đã trải qua mang thai tuổi teen và làm mẹ sớm tại vùng Greater Melbourne, Úc, đã tham gia vào nghiên cứu này. Các cuộc phỏng vấn được ghi âm, phiên âm và dữ liệu được phân tích bằng phương pháp phân tích nội dung chủ đề. Chấp thuận về đạo đức cho nghiên cứu này đã được ủy ban Đạo đức Nghiên cứu Con người của Đại học Victoria cấp. Thiên chức làm mẹ mang lại trách nhiệm gia tăng, sự công nhận trong xã hội và cảm giác về mục đích sống cho các bà mẹ trẻ. Mặc dù có nhiều khía cạnh tích cực của thiên chức làm mẹ, nhưng những người tham gia gặp phải những thách thức ảnh hưởng đến cuộc sống của họ.
