Bất chấp các tiến bộ trong điều trị dự phòng, hội chứng mạch vành cấp tính (ACS) vẫn là một nguyên nhân đáng kể gây ra tỷ lệ bệnh tật và tử vong. Mức độ nguy cơ của bệnh nhân thay đổi rất lớn, trải dài từ cơn đau thắt ngực không ổn định đến nhồi máu cơ tim nâng ST (STEMI) và có thể được ước lượng bằng các thuật toán dự đoán nguy cơ. Nguy cơ ước lượng rất hữu ích trong việc lựa chọn các phương pháp điều trị, từ liệu pháp y tế tích cực cho các bệnh nhân có nguy cơ thấp đến tái thông mạch cho bệnh nhân có nguy cơ cao, trong đó phẫu thuật bắc cầu hoặc can thiệp mạch vành qua da (PCI) là khả thi.
