Địa hình của một lưu vực có ảnh hưởng lớn đến các quá trình thủy văn, địa mạo học và sinh hóa đang hoạt động trong cảnh quan. Phân bố không gian của các thuộc tính địa hình thường có thể được sử dụng như một phép đo gián tiếp của sự biến thiên không gian của các quá trình này, cho phép chúng được lập bản đồ bằng các kỹ thuật tương đối đơn giản. Nhiều hệ thống thông tin địa lý đang được phát triển để lưu trữ thông tin địa hình như là dữ liệu chính cho việc phân tích các vấn đề về tài nguyên nước và sinh học. Hơn nữa, địa hình có thể được sử dụng để phát triển các cấu trúc thực tế hơn cho các mô hình thủy văn và chất lượng nước, mà trực tiếp xem xét tác động của địa hình đến thủy văn.
