Y học cổ truyền Trung Quốc (YHCT) cung cấp các tác dụng điều trị và chăm sóc sức khỏe thông qua việc tiêu thụ thực phẩm. Do khả năng dễ bị ô nhiễm của các loại cây, một hệ thống đánh giá rủi ro là cần thiết để đảm bảo việc sử dụng YHCT một cách an toàn. Trong nghiên cứu này, đã điều tra mức độ ô nhiễm và rủi ro liên quan đến việc tiêu thụ các parafin clo hóa chuỗi ngắn (SCCPs) và parafin clo hóa chuỗi trung (MCCPs) trong sáu loại thảo dược YHCT thường xuyên được sử dụng. Nồng độ dao động từ 144,4 đến 1527,8 ng·g−1 dw cho SCCPs và không phát hiện đến 1214,1 ng·g−1 dw cho MCCPs, với giá trị trung bình lần lượt là 551,5 và 259,8 ng·g−1 dw. Phân tích phân bổ địa lý cho thấy nồng độ CPs trong YHCT chủ yếu liên quan đến mức độ ô nhiễm trong môi trường xung quanh. Hồ sơ đồng phân carbon-chlorine của CPs được chi phối bởi các đồng phân C10Cl7-8 và C14Cl7-8, chiếm lần lượt 20,1% và 32,4% tổng nồng độ SCCP và MCCP. Phân tích thành phần chính chỉ ra rằng các loài YHCT có thể là yếu tố chính ảnh hưởng đến sự tích tụ của các đồng phân SCCPs. Cuối cùng, một đánh giá rủi ro tiết lộ rằng lượng tiêu thụ ước tính hàng ngày và tỷ lệ tiếp xúc đều thấp hơn nhiều so với các mức có thể gây rủi ro sức khỏe, cho thấy lượng tiêu thụ SCCPs và MCCPs trong các YHCT đã nghiên cứu là chấp nhận được. Đây là báo cáo đầu tiên về CPs trong các thảo dược YHCT và các kết quả thu được dự kiến sẽ hỗ trợ trong việc đánh giá chất lượng YHCT trong tương lai và đảm bảo an toàn cho chế độ ăn uống cũng như thuốc.
