Báo cáo nghiên cứu này mô tả sự phát triển của một tác nhân gây stress trong phòng thí nghiệm thực tế ảo (VR) nhằm nghiên cứu tác động của việc tiếp xúc với các sự kiện căng thẳng. Mục tiêu của nghiên cứu là phát triển một mô phỏng VR sẽ kích thích phản ứng căng thẳng ở mức độ chấp nhận được cho các tham gia viên. Các cựu chiến binh có và không có rối loạn stress sau chấn thương (PTSD) liên quan đến chiến tranh đã được trình bày các mô phỏng VR của các tác nhân gây stress trong chiến đấu. Chỉ có một lời phàn nàn về việc cảm thấy nóng trong quá trình mô phỏng nhưng không có sự cố nào liên quan đến bệnh mô phỏng. Các tham gia viên phủ nhận việc cảm thấy các mô phỏng là quá căng thẳng, và không có báo cáo nào về sự lo âu hoặc vấn đề liên quan đến việc tham gia nghiên cứu khi họ được liên lạc hai tuần sau thử thách VR. Các mô phỏng đã kích thích mức độ lo âu vừa phải và mức độ phân ly nhẹ, điều này đáng kể hơn ở các cựu chiến binh có PTSD.
