Việc xác định các nhiễm sắc thể riêng lẻ trong giống Lupinus là không khả thi do sự biến động về kích thước và hình thái tương tự. Để khắc phục vấn đề này, di truyền tế bào phân tử đã được phát triển cho giống Lupinus. Là bước khởi đầu trong phân tích karyotype, phương pháp lai huỳnh quang trong tế bào (FISH) đã được thực hiện để xác định phân bố gen rRNA trong các loài L. hispanicus, L. luteus và L. × hispanicoluteus. Kết quả cho thấy cả ba loài lưỡng bội đều có hai cặp nhiễm sắc thể mang gen 18S-5.8S-25S rDNA và một cặp nhiễm sắc thể mang gen 5S rDNA. Việc sử dụng các đầu dò cho rDNA đã cho phép xác định rõ ràng ba cặp nhiễm sắc thể khác nhau và tiết lộ sự bảo tồn số lượng vị trí rDNA giữa ba loài. Nghiên cứu này đại diện cho bước đầu tiên trong việc lập bản đồ vật lý của bộ gen Lupinus thông qua FISH bằng cách cung cấp các điểm mốc nhiễm sắc thể rõ ràng.
