Chúng tôi nghiên cứu các yếu tố quyết định hợp tác nghiên cứu và phát triển (R&D) trong các doanh nghiệp vừa và nhỏ (SMEs). Sử dụng dữ liệu cấp doanh nghiệp từ Khảo sát Đổi mới sáng tạo Hàn Quốc năm 2002 và áp dụng mô hình probit với lựa chọn mẫu, chúng tôi phát hiện rằng sự lan tỏa kiến thức từ bên ngoài có tác động đáng kể và tích cực đến quyết định của SMEs trong việc tham gia hợp tác R&D. Đặc biệt, ảnh hưởng của sự lan tỏa kiến thức đối với hợp tác R&D lớn hơn rất nhiều đối với những doanh nghiệp nhỏ hơn. Mặc dù việc tiếp nhận kiến thức từ bên ngoài rất quan trọng đối với SMEs, nhưng kết quả ước lượng cho thấy SMEs có thể gặp bất lợi trong việc thiết lập các mối liên kết R&D bên ngoài do hạn chế về quy mô tuyệt đối.
