Hai phần ba bệnh nhân mắc chứng đau đầu do lạm dụng thuốc (MOH) đáp ứng tiêu chí phụ thuộc vào các phương pháp điều trị triệu chứng cấp tính để giảm đau, không loại trừ các loại thuốc có tác dụng tâm thần, dựa trên ấn bản thứ tư của Sổ tay Chẩn đoán và Thống kê các Rối loạn Tâm thần. Nhiều bảng câu hỏi đã được sử dụng để đánh giá hành vi phụ thuộc ở bệnh nhân mắc chứng MOH. Những phát hiện liên quan đến các hồ sơ tâm lý tiềm ẩn của sự phụ thuộc và MOH không nhất quán. Tuy nhiên, một số nghiên cứu về hình ảnh não, di truyền và sinh học thần kinh hỗ trợ sự tồn tại của các đặc điểm sinh lý bệnh chung của sự phụ thuộc và MOH và gợi ý một liên kết giữa chúng. Bài tổng quan này nhấn mạnh các nghiên cứu gần đây về mối quan hệ giữa sự phụ thuộc và MOH.
