Để đảm bảo bệnh nhân nhận được đúng lượng thuốc cần thiết, điều dưỡng viên phải có khả năng tính toán liều lượng chính xác. Việc cấp phát sai lượng thuốc có thể dẫn đến tổn hại nghiêm trọng và trong trường hợp xấu nhất có thể gây ra cái chết cho bệnh nhân. Nghiên cứu cho thấy nhiều lỗi trong việc kê đơn thuốc xảy ra do kỹ năng tính toán kém.
