Sự gia tăng đáng báo động của các trường hợp nhiễm HIV ở người lớn trẻ tuổi tại Philippines do hành vi tình dục nguy cơ đã khiến các tác giả tiến hành nghiên cứu các hành vi tình dục giữa những người trưởng thành trẻ tuổi khiếm thính và LGBT+. Dự án này khám phá những trải nghiệm lãng mạn của những người trưởng thành trẻ tuổi tự xác định là khiếm thính và LGBT+ tại Philippines, đồng thời điều tra các hoạt động tình dục liên quan trong những trải nghiệm này. Các ý nghĩa rút ra từ các câu chuyện kể bằng ngôn ngữ ký hiệu cho thấy có nhiều mức độ thân mật tình dục (tức là từ "không hoàn chỉnh" đến "hoàn chỉnh"), khác nhau từ người này sang người khác, với các rủi ro liên quan gia tăng khi các hoạt động trở nên mãnh liệt hơn. Điều thú vị là, quá trình tạo ra ý nghĩa, được biểu tượng hóa thông qua các ký hiệu, khác biệt so với ngôn ngữ nói thông thường. Hơn nữa, dù dữ liệu từ các người tham gia chỉ ra rằng hầu hết trong số họ thường xuyên quan hệ tình dục với cùng một người, nhưng đã có một số yếu tố rủi ro được phát hiện có thể gây ảnh hưởng đến sức khoẻ của họ: không sử dụng bao cao su và thiếu hiểu biết về bản chất và cách lây truyền các bệnh lây truyền qua đường tình dục (VD: HIV, giang mai và lậu). Mặc dù thách thức về cảm giác có thể góp phần gây khó khăn trong việc tiếp nhận các chiến dịch sức khoẻ tình dục chính thống, nhưng mức độ nhận thức cũng bị cản trở bởi sự thiếu hụt những người phiên dịch ngôn ngữ ký hiệu hợp tác với các chuyên gia được đào tạo đúng cách nhằm đạt được một kiến thức chuyển giao về giáo dục sức khoẻ tình dục hợp lý. Cần có những cải tiến trong việc giáo dục sức khoẻ tình dục cho người khiếm thính, và các tác giả đã phát triển một phương pháp tiếp cận chuyển giao để nâng cao kiến thức về sức khoẻ tình dục nhằm đáp ứng đặc biệt nhu cầu về sức khoẻ tình dục của cộng đồng LGBT+ trong cộng đồng người khiếm thính.
