Việc truyền dẫn chức năng điều hành giữa các thế hệ có thể được tăng cường hoặc bị gián đoạn bởi những yếu tố căng thẳng môi trường quan trọng về mặt văn hóa, hình thành nên cách thực hành chức năng điều hành trong gia đình. Xây dựng dựa trên những nghiên cứu trước đây, nghiên cứu hiện tại kiểm tra liệu những yếu tố căng thẳng có liên quan về văn hóa như căng thẳng kinh tế và căng thẳng từ người nước ngoài có ảnh hưởng trực tiếp đến chức năng điều hành của thanh thiếu niên hay không, cũng như liệu chúng có điều chỉnh sự truyền dẫn giữa các thế hệ về chức năng điều hành giữa mẹ và con (tức là, trí nhớ làm việc, kiểm soát ức chế và khả năng chuyển đổi) trong các gia đình nhập cư Mexico có thu nhập thấp. Mẫu nghiên cứu bao gồm 179 thanh thiếu niên người Mexico gốc Mỹ (Mage = 17.03 năm; SDage = 0.83; 58% là nữ) và các bà mẹ sinh ra tại Mexico (Mage = 43.25 năm; SDage = 5.90). Kết quả cho thấy rằng căng thẳng kinh tế mà các bà mẹ cảm nhận được có liên quan đến khả năng kiểm soát ức chế kém ở thanh thiếu niên.
