Để thực hiện điều này, bài báo áp dụng phương pháp tiếp cận lựa chọn rời rạc và một cuộc khảo sát thăm dò có 278 người mua xe tiềm năng tại Ý. Kết quả cung cấp sự hỗ trợ mạnh mẽ cho giả thuyết chính của nghiên cứu rằng người tiêu dùng sẵn lòng trả nhiều hơn cho những phương tiện sạch hơn, như được thể hiện bằng sự sẵn lòng trả thêm có tính biên cho lượng khí thải thấp hơn. Những người mua xe tiềm năng thực sự có vẻ sẵn lòng trả thêm khoảng 2100 € cho việc giảm 20% lượng CO2 mỗi kilômét so với mức tiêu chuẩn hiện tại mà ngành công nghiệp ô tô phải tuân thủ. Đặc biệt, chúng tôi ước tính sự sẵn lòng trả khoảng 88 € cho việc giảm 1-g CO2 mỗi kilômét (với khoảng tin cậy 95% dao động từ 54 € đến 122 €).
