Các nguyên tố vi lượng (TEs) có thể góp phần vào việc hình thành sỏi hoặc tham gia vào sinh lý bệnh của các bệnh liên quan đến sỏi. Thành phần và phân bố không gian của các nguyên tố từ nhân trong đến lớp vỏ ngoài của hòn sỏi tim đã được nghiên cứu bằng kỹ thuật quang phổ huỳnh quang tia X phân tán năng lượng (EDXRF). Hình thái bề mặt, bản đồ phân bố các nguyên tố, cũng như thành phần nguyên tố và thành phần hóa học cũng được xác định thông qua phân tích kính hiển vi điện tử quét môi trường (ESEM)–phổ huỳnh quang tia X phân tán năng lượng (EDX). Hai mươi lăm nguyên tố đã được xác định từ 18 vị trí trên hòn sỏi tim bằng máy quang phổ EDXRF, trong đó các nguyên tố độc hại (Ni, Pt, Hg, Sn, Pb, W, Au, Al, Si) có nồng độ cao nhất và các nguyên tố vi lượng thiết yếu (Ca, Sr, Cr, P) có mức độ cao hơn đã được phát hiện. Một mối tương quan Pearson dương ở mức độ vừa giữa nồng độ TEs của Mg, Ca hoặc P với sự khác biệt vị trí từ trung tâm đến ngoại vi trên hòn sỏi tim đã được quan sát. Một mối tương quan dương cũng được tìm thấy đối với Ca/Zn và Ca/Cu, cho thấy sự gia tăng dần dần nồng độ canxi từ nhân trong đến lớp vỏ ngoài của hòn sỏi tim. Các hạt/các tinh thể hình giống như giọt nước trên bề mặt phần đá của hòn sỏi tim đã được quan sát từ phân tích ESEM. Phân tích ESEM–EDX xác định hòn sỏi chủ yếu được cấu thành từ canxi hydroxyapatite và cholesterol, như đã chỉ ra bởi bề mặt phần đá và các hạt/tinh thể hình giọt nước tương ứng. Thành phần này đã được xác nhận bằng cách sử dụng máy phân tích Raman cầm tay. Phân tích phân bố không gian chỉ ra sự gia tăng dần dần nồng độ Mg, P và Ca từ nhân trong đến lớp vỏ ngoài của hòn sỏi tim. Các thành phần hóa học chính của canxi hydroxyapatite và cholesterol đã được phát hiện trên hòn sỏi tim này.
