Gãy xương đùi gần không ổn định và các tổn thương bệnh lý liên quan đến vùng trochanter ở người cao tuổi tạo nên một khối lượng công việc ngày càng tăng cho bác sĩ phẫu thuật chấn thương khi dân số lão hóa gia tăng. Nghiên cứu này nhằm đánh giá việc sử dụng đinh tái tạo Russell-Taylor (RTRN) trong nhóm này liên quan đến nguy cơ tử vong, tỷ lệ biến chứng và kết quả cuối cùng. Đánh giá hồi cứu 42 bệnh nhân trên 60 tuổi được điều trị bằng đinh tái tạo cho gãy xương đùi gần trong khoảng thời gian 4 năm. Hơn hai phần ba bệnh nhân có nguy cơ gây mê cao (ASA > 3) với bệnh tim thiếu máu cục bộ là bệnh lý đi kèm phổ biến nhất. 4 bệnh nhân đã tử vong trong vòng 30 ngày sau phẫu thuật và 4 bệnh nhân cần phẫu thuật thêm do thất bại liên quan đến thiết bị cấy ghép. Phần lớn bệnh nhân không hồi phục lại được tình trạng di chuyển trước chấn thương và ít hơn một nửa số bệnh nhân trở về nơi cư trú ban đầu. Việc cố định thành công những gãy xương đùi phức tạp không ổn định ở dân số cao tuổi có thể đạt được với đinh tái tạo Russell-Taylor. Tuy nhiên, việc sử dụng thiết bị này ở nhóm dân số yếu ớt này có liên quan đến tỷ lệ biến chứng và tử vong cao của cấy ghép, điều này chắc chắn phản ánh mức độ nghiêm trọng của chấn thương, các bệnh lý đi kèm trong nhóm và căng thẳng của một thủ thuật phẫu thuật lớn.
