Năm 2001, Hiệp hội Tim mạch Hà Lan đã ban hành các hướng dẫn về phục hồi chức năng sau cơn đột quỵ. Những hướng dẫn này nhằm cung cấp sự hỗ trợ cho các nhân viên y tế trong thực tiễn và tạo ra giải pháp cho các vấn đề sau đây: thiếu sự điều phối tổ chức liên quan đến phục hồi chức năng trong dịch vụ đột quỵ và các lĩnh vực liên quan; sử dụng chưa đủ các nhận thức khoa học; và nơi mà bằng chứng khoa học còn thiếu, thiếu sự đồng thuận nội dung và hỗ trợ. Các hướng dẫn này dựa trên các hướng dẫn hiện có và được xây dựng dựa trên chứng cứ (dựa trên bằng chứng tốt nhất hiện có). Trong các hướng dẫn này, có sự chú ý đặc biệt đến các hậu quả về nhận thức, cảm xúc và hành vi của một cơn đột quỵ, vì những hậu quả này có thể ảnh hưởng lớn đến hoạt động hàng ngày của bệnh nhân và những người liên quan; và vì chủ đề này chưa được chú ý đủ trong các hướng dẫn hiện có cho đến nay. Trong bài viết này, các hướng dẫn về các hậu quả không thể nhìn thấy được sẽ được trình bày và giải thích, bao gồm cả việc chẩn đoán và điều trị. Nhà tâm lý học và đội ngũ phục hồi chức năng có thể sử dụng các hướng dẫn trong thực tế khi đưa ra các quyết định chẩn đoán và điều trị.
