Các hệ sinh thái đồi cát ven biển phải chịu áp lực nặng nề và các yếu tố xáo trộn, đặc biệt cao trong môi trường bãi biển-đồi cát trước và giảm dần theo khoảng cách ra xa bờ. Nghiên cứu này nhằm liên kết thành phần loài thực vật của các đồi cát ven biển với các quá trình động lực học vật lý của đường bờ ở miền trung Italia. Một thiết kế lấy mẫu phân cấp ngẫu nhiên, dựa trên hai quy mô không gian (khối và ô), đã được áp dụng để ước lượng sự biến đổi trong thành phần cộng đồng thực vật. Phân tích phương sai đa biến permutational (PERMANOVA) cho thấy một lượng biến đổi tương tự đối với cả lớp động lực học ven biển và cấp ô. Thêm vào đó, phân tích tọa độ chính cho thấy ba taxa – Ammophila arenaria, Elymus farctus và Otanthus maritimus subsp. maritimus – chủ yếu liên kết với động lực học ven biển: A. arenaria tăng độ phong phú nơi xói mòn đường bờ rất cao, trong khi E. farctus và O. maritimus phong phú hơn ở bờ biển bồi tụ. Cuối cùng, phân tích tỷ lệ tương tự (SIMPER) đã chỉ ra rằng nơi mà các quá trình xói mòn mạnh nhất, số lượng loài góp phần vào tổng độ tương tự là cao nhất. Điều này khả năng chỉ ra sự không ổn định và xáo trộn mạnh mẽ của các cộng đồng thực vật dẫn đến sự cân bằng không ổn định. Những phát hiện này có ý nghĩa quan trọng cho các hoạt động quản lý và bảo tồn.
