De rol van de klinisch farmacoloog (KF) in de zorg voor ziekenhuis- en verpleeghuispatiënten is in de laatste decennia veranderd met een toegenomen nadruk op interdisciplinaire samenwerking en interactie met de patiënt. De rol van de klinisch farmacoloog verschilt van de traditionele apotheker in de directe samenwerking met zowel medische professionals als patiënten en beperkt zich niet meer tot het louter verstrekken van geneesmiddelen.
