Trong nghiên cứu về các vi tảo heterotrophic nanoflagellates tại Southampton Water, từ năm 1991 đến 1994, đã quan sát được bốn mươi ba loài choanoflagellates. Phần lớn các loài này là choanoflagellates có vỏ (Acanthoecidae), nhóm này chiếm khoảng –8% tổng số nano-plankton heterotrophic trong thời gian nghiên cứu. Các loài choanoflagellates không có vỏ (Codosigidae và Salpingoecidae) ít đa dạng hơn, chỉ chiếm khoảng 3–4% tổng số nano-plankton heterotrophic.
