Các rối loạn ăn uống có nguồn gốc từ sớm, và có thể tồn tại một chuỗi liên tục giữa hành vi ăn uống thời thơ ấu, như ăn quá mức, và sự rối loạn ăn uống dài hạn, nhưng điều này vẫn cần được chứng minh. Chỉ số khối cơ thể (BMI), mong muốn có thân hình thon gọn và tình trạng bị bắt nạt bởi bạn bè có thể ảnh hưởng đến chuỗi này, tuy nhiên sự tương tác giữa chúng vẫn chưa rõ ràng. Để lấp đầy khoảng trống này, nghiên cứu đã sử dụng dữ liệu từ Nghiên cứu Dọc Sự Phát Triển Trẻ Em Quebec (N = 1511; 52% là nữ), trong đó 30.9% thanh niên đã trình bày một lộ trình gắn với sự ăn uống rối loạn cao từ 12 đến 20 tuổi. Kết quả hỗ trợ mối liên hệ gián tiếp giữa việc ăn quá nhiều ở tuổi lên 5 và lộ trình ăn uống rối loạn, với các quá trình trung gian khác nhau được quan sát giữa nam và nữ. Những phát hiện này nhấn mạnh tầm quan trọng của việc thúc đẩy hình ảnh cơ thể và hành vi ăn uống lành mạnh trong giới trẻ.
