Trong 20 năm qua, một số hệ thống đã được phát triển để kiểm soát biểu hiện gen chuyển (transgene) trong cây trồng bằng cách sử dụng hóa chất. Các thành phần được sử dụng để xây dựng những hệ thống này chủ yếu được lấy từ các trình tự điều tiết không phải là thực vật, chẳng hạn như vi khuẩn, nấm, côn trùng và động vật có vú. Những cấu trúc này cho phép kiểm soát biểu hiện gen chuyển theo thời gian, không gian và định lượng nhờ sự hỗ trợ của các hóa chất ngoại lai, mà không làm gián đoạn quá trình biểu hiện gen nội sinh của cây. Các hệ thống biểu hiện gen chuyển được điều chỉnh bằng hóa chất, những ưu điểm/nhược điểm của chúng và tiềm năng ứng dụng quy mô lớn tại hiện trường đã được xem xét.
