El carcinoma de células de Merkel, previamente llamado carcinoma trabecular o carcinoma de células trabeculares, es una neoplasia cutánea poco común. Desde su descripción original se han descrito más de 1.000 casos. La lesión típica consiste en un nódulo solitario o placa indurada roja, violácea o púrpura que tiene una superficie brillante rodeada de telangiectasias suprayacentes. La epidermis puede estar intacta o ulcerada y ocasionalmente ser pedunculada. El sitio más común es la piel de la cabeza y el cuello y las extremidades. El tratamiento de esta neoplasia es multimodal, y la mayoría de los casos requieren la realización de cirugía, radioterapia y quimioterapia. La supervivencia a 5 años oscila del 36% al 95%.
