Sự điều tiết của quá trình chuyển hóa carbohydrate và phân chia các bậc tổ chức đã được nghiên cứu trong quá trình thích nghi của các cây con Calathea được nuôi cấy mô. Tại thời điểm cấy ghép, cây được đặc trưng bởi một quá trình chuyển hóa dị dưỡng, với rễ và thân là các cơ quan dự trữ chính cho carbohydrate. Khi quá trình thích nghi diễn ra, một sự chuyển đổi sang sự phát triển tự dưỡng đã được quan sát: lá trở thành các cơ quan nguồn, điều này được phản ánh qua sự gia tăng đáng kể hoạt động của invertase, sucrose synthase và sucrose-P synthase. Việc huy động các chất dự trữ trong rễ và thân cũng được quan sát trong cùng một khoảng thời gian. Sự tích lũy sucrose và tinh bột trong lá có mối tương quan dương với cường độ ánh sáng tăng.
