Axit docosahexaenoic (DHA) là một axit béo không bão hòa đa, gồm 22 nguyên tử carbon và sáu liên kết đôi. Vì liên kết đôi đầu tiên, được tính từ đầu methyl, nằm ở vị trí thứ ba, DHA thuộc nhóm được gọi là ω-3. Những năm gần đây, DHA đã thu hút được sự chú ý lớn do tác động tích cực của nó đối với sức khỏe con người. Hiện nay, dầu cá là nguồn cung cấp chính DHA, nhưng ngoài ra, nó cũng có thể được sản xuất bằng cách sử dụng vi sinh vật.
