Trong một cái nhìn tổng quát, các con đường chuyển hóa của một số loại ký sinh trùng được thảo luận dưới góc độ tác động của các hóa trị liệu được chọn lọc. Sự khác biệt trong chuyển hóa giữa ký chủ và ký sinh trùng có thể đưa ra những quan điểm mới cho việc phát triển các chất chống ký sinh trùng. Đặc biệt chú ý đến chuyển hóa năng lượng. Trong đó, việc tái sinh NAD đóng một vai trò quan trọng. Trong bối cảnh này, sự quan trọng của fumarate reductase đối với một số loại động vật giáp xác được nhấn mạnh. Bên cạnh đó, các chất gây rối loạn sự hấp thu glucose được đề cập, và chúng phát huy tác động ở cấp độ tổng hợp axit nucleic và chuyển hóa C-1.
