Nghiên cứu này đã khảo sát các mối liên kết hai chiều giữa các hình thức kỷ luật của giáo viên (hình phạt và giáo dục), thể trạng bạn bè của học sinh trong lớp (sự chấp nhận và bị từ chối), và hành vi nghịch ngợm của học sinh. Mẫu nghiên cứu bao gồm 1.038 học sinh (tuổi trung bình = 5,43 tuổi) được đánh giá bằng những công cụ giống nhau vào mùa thu và mùa xuân của một năm học mẫu giáo. Các giáo viên đã báo cáo về các hình thức kỷ luật mà họ áp dụng với từng học sinh trong lớp mình. Hành vi nghịch ngợm, việc bị từ chối bởi bạn bè và sự chấp nhận của bạn bè đã được đo lường thông qua sự chỉ định xã hội giữa các bạn học. Mô hình hồi quy tự động với độ trễ chéo đã được sử dụng để kiểm tra các mối liên kết hai chiều. Kết quả cho thấy có những liên kết luân chuyển giữa các hình thức kỷ luật mang tính hình phạt, việc bị từ chối bởi bạn bè, và hành vi nghịch ngợm của học sinh. Cụ thể hơn, kỷ luật mang tính hình phạt vào đầu năm học mẫu giáo dự đoán việc bị từ chối bởi bạn bè cao hơn và mức độ hành vi nghịch ngợm cao hơn vào cuối năm học. Hành vi nghịch ngợm của học sinh và việc bị từ chối bởi bạn bè vào đầu năm học dự đoán việc sử dụng nhiều hơn các hình thức kỷ luật mang tính hình phạt vào cuối năm học. Kỷ luật mang tính giáo dục không góp phần làm thay đổi thể trạng bạn bè của học sinh và hành vi nghịch ngợm của học sinh.
