Nghiên cứu này khám phá các hồ sơ cảm xúc và hành vi của 41 trẻ em bị lãng quên, trong độ tuổi từ 6 đến 12, so với một nhóm chứng gồm 41 trẻ em. Hệ thống Achenbach được sử dụng để mô tả các hồ sơ cảm xúc và hành vi dựa trên Tiêu chí Chẩn đoán của DSM-IV [Sổ tay Chẩn đoán và Thống kê Các Rối loạn Tâm thần, ấn bản thứ 4]. Trẻ em bị lãng quên có nhiều triệu chứng hơn trên các thang đo của DSM-IV liên quan đến các vấn đề về hành vi hoặc vấn đề chú ý/hiếu động thái quá. Dựa trên nhận thức của giáo viên, trẻ em bị lạm dụng cho thấy nhiều vấn đề bên ngoài và bên trong hơn cũng như triệu chứng trên các thang đo của DSM-IV. Kết quả nghiên cứu ủng hộ tính liên quan của việc sử dụng Tiêu chí Chẩn đoán của DSM-IV và tầm quan trọng của việc thu thập các nhận thức khác nhau của những người tham gia để hiểu rõ hơn về chân dung cảm xúc và hành vi của trẻ em bị lãng quên.
