Reumatoïde arthritis van de cervicale wervelkolom is een veel voorkomende oorzaak van nekklachten. Een discussie over mogelijke effecten van verschillende behandelmethoden op de weefsels van patiënten met reumatoïde arthritis van de cervicale wervelkolom komt maar zelden voor in de fysiotherapeutische literatuur. Fysiotherapeuten behoren echter de implicaties van dit type inflammatoire arthritis te begrijpen wanneer zij patiënten met reumatoïde arthritis behandelen. De resultaten van het inflammatoire proces en de mechanische krachten op de cervicale wervelkolom kunnen in een eindstadium een atlanto-axiale subluxatie veroorzaken, atlanto-axiale impressiefracturen en een subaxiale subluxatie. Het doel van dit artikel is, een literatuuroverzicht te geven van de volgende aspecten van reumatoïde arthritis van de cervicale wervelkolom. 1. pathologische anatomie; 2. klinische bevindingen; 3. chirurgische behandeling; 4. behandeling met cervicale orthesen en 5. behandeling met fysiotherapie
