Marx coi việc tái sản xuất năng lực lao động là một vòng tròn trong đó tiền lương phải đủ để mua các hàng hóa cần thiết nhằm đáp ứng "những yêu cầu cần thiết được gọi là" của người lao động, đó là "các sản phẩm của lịch sử." Trong bài viết này, tôi lập luận rằng, qua cuộc điều tra dân tộc học về tiền lương như một dấu hiệu của những yêu cầu này, chúng ta có thể có được một kho tàng tri thức về việc tiền lương giúp xây dựng các nhóm công nhân khác nhau thuộc về các kiểu người khác nhau, thường kết hợp với các loại hình như chủng tộc và quyền công dân.
